Language-Based Enrichment Programs
This course provides intensive reading intervention designed to improve decoding and spelling abilities. The developmental progression of the Wilson Reading System is customized for each student with an emphasis on word attack skills, identification of sound patterns, syllable segmentation, and automaticity. Customized programming and research based techniques maximize gains during these valuable summer months.
Appropriate for grades 1 to 6.
In this course, key components of advanced reading comprehension are taught in isolation then layered to promote in-depth comprehension of grade-appropriate texts. Skills include visualizing, rehearsing, text marking, vocabulary, summarizing, inferencing, and figurative language. Patterns of strengths and weaknesses will be identified to direct intervention to best meet the needs of each student. Students’ required summer readings can also be incorporated in preparation for the next school year.
Appropriate for grades 3 to 11.
This program is specifically designed for bright students who are underachieving in the classroom or those who need help in preparing for standardized tests such as the ACT or SAT. Direct instruction in comprehending directions, task analysis, strategies for preparation, note-taking, and concentration strategies help build the students’
academic confidence and reduce test taking anxiety. Test prep instruction focuses intensively on vocabulary instruction through knowledge of Greek and Latin roots and reading comprehension through visualization, retention, rehearsing, and key concept identification.
